In men’s college baskeball, Florida can be upset by Florida State, UCLA by West Virginia, North Carolina by Virgina Tech but this rarely happens in women’s basketball. Is this because there is more parity in men’s basketball? Do all the really good women’s players just keep going to Duke, Carolina, Maryland, Stanford, Tennessee, and UConn and everyone else is left in the dust? In the women’s NCAA tournament it plays more or less according to seeds and it won’t see a George Mason advancing to the final four. Why? Why? Why?

1My theory is that there are not enough truly elite players for your second tier teams to pull upsets yet. As more women realize they can receive scholarships by playing basketball and certain players look for opportunities to really play- and not just sit on the bench for a UConn or Tennessee, they will improve. Just think, ten years ago it was Connecticut, Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, and everyone else. Now you have three elite ACC programs, Rutgers, LSU, Stanford, and several other teams who will make some noise in the tournament even though it eould be surpirsing if Duke or North Carolina didn’t win it.

2The field of talent isn’t as deep in women’s basketball, so upsets are less likely. There is more talent and deeper teams than their used to be.
